How We Measure AI Visibility

Transparency is important to us. Here is exactly how the Geo One AI Visibility Scanner works, what the score means and what it does not.

What is AI Visibility?

AI Visibility measures how well AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and DeepSeek can discover, understand and recommend your business. Unlike traditional search rankings, AI Visibility reflects whether AI assistants mention your brand, cite your content, or recommend your services when users ask relevant questions.

Which platforms are tested?

Coverage depends on your plan: Bronze monitors 3 AI engines, Silver 4 and Gold 5. ChatGPT (OpenAI) and Claude (Anthropic) are included on every plan and cannot be swapped out. You choose the rest from Perplexity, Gemini (Google) and DeepSeek: one choice on Bronze, two on Silver, all three on Gold. DeepSeek matters most if you sell to Chinese-language buyers, where a business can rank well in ChatGPT and be absent from DeepSeek entirely. As new platforms gain meaningful adoption, they are added to the roster. Platform availability may vary based on API access and regional availability.

How prompts are selected

Prompts are selected based on the questions your potential customers are most likely to ask. These include industry-specific queries, location-based questions, service comparisons and recommendation requests. Prompt sets are customised for each business based on industry, services and target audience. Each plan tracks a defined prompt set made up of three types: industry prompts drawn from how buyers in your sector actually ask, benchmark prompts run identically against your named competitors, and custom prompts you choose yourself. Bronze tracks 6 prompts (2 of each type), Silver tracks 15 (5 of each) and Gold tracks 33 (11 of each). Every prompt is tested on each engine your plan covers, so a single scan runs 18 tests on Bronze, 60 on Silver and 165 on Gold. ChatGPT and Claude are fixed on every plan for a reason: they are the two engines every client is measured on, which is what makes the Benchmark Score comparable between businesses in the same industry. If every client picked their own engines, no two scores would mean the same thing. The engines you choose are reported separately.

Mentions vs. citations

A mention occurs when an AI platform references your business name in a response. A citation occurs when the platform links to or directly references a specific page on your website as a source. Citations generally indicate stronger AI visibility than mentions alone, as they suggest the platform trusts your content as authoritative.

Competitor comparisons

When competitors are provided, Geo One tests the same prompts against each competitor to determine relative positioning. This shows where your business ranks in AI recommendations compared to your competitors. Competitor data is refreshed according to your plan's monitoring frequency.

How location and personalisation affect results

AI responses can vary based on the user's location, conversation history and platform version. Geo One standardises testing conditions where possible, but results should be understood as representative rather than absolute. Different users asking the same question may receive different recommendations.

What the score represents

The AI Visibility Score is a composite metric reflecting your brand's presence across monitored AI platforms. It considers factors including mention frequency, citation quality, recommendation positioning and content coverage. The score is designed to track improvement over time rather than serve as an absolute benchmark.

What the score does not represent

The score does not guarantee that any specific AI platform will recommend your business. It does not predict future rankings or promise a specific level of visibility. AI responses are generated dynamically and depend on many factors beyond any single business's control, including model updates, training data changes and user context.

Why results can vary

AI platforms update their models and training data regularly. A business that is mentioned today may not be mentioned tomorrow, and vice versa. Seasonal factors, competitor activity, content freshness and platform algorithm changes all influence results. Consistent improvement over months is a more reliable indicator than any single scan.

When scans occur and monitoring frequency

The initial scan is performed when you submit your details. Ongoing monitoring frequency depends on your plan: Bronze clients receive monthly scans, Silver clients receive fortnightly monitoring, and Gold clients receive weekly monitoring with additional prompt coverage. Each scan is timestamped so you know exactly when results were captured.
