What Is Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)?

The way people find businesses is changing. Instead of typing keywords into Google and scrolling through ten blue links, a growing number of people are asking AI assistants for direct recommendations. They ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity questions like “What’s the best clinic near me?” or “Which law firm handles corporate acquisitions in KL?” and receive direct answers.

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of making your business discoverable, understandable and recommendable by these AI platforms. If traditional SEO is about ranking on Google, GEO is about being the business that AI recommends.

How GEO Differs from Traditional SEO

Traditional SEO focuses on keywords, backlinks and page rankings. You optimise a page, build links, and hope to appear on page one of Google. The user clicks through, visits your website, and hopefully converts.

GEO works differently. AI platforms do not show a list of links. They generate a response, a direct answer that may mention, cite or recommend specific businesses. There is no “page one” to rank on. The AI either recommends your business or it does not.

This means the optimisation approach is fundamentally different. Instead of focusing on keyword density and link profiles, GEO focuses on:

  • Entity clarity: making it unambiguous what your business is, what it does, and where it operates
  • Content authority: creating comprehensive, well-structured content that AI platforms trust as a source
  • Structured data: implementing schema markup that helps AI platforms understand your content programmatically
  • Question coverage: answering the specific questions people ask AI platforms about your industry
  • Citation worthiness: making your content the most authoritative source AI platforms can reference

Why GEO Matters for Malaysian Businesses

AI adoption in Malaysia is accelerating. Professionals, students and consumers are increasingly using AI assistants as their first point of research. When a potential customer asks an AI assistant for a recommendation in your industry and your business is not mentioned, you are invisible to that entire channel.

The businesses that invest in GEO now will establish an early-mover advantage. AI platforms tend to reinforce their own recommendations. Once your business is the one being mentioned, the compound effect of consistent content and authority building makes it increasingly difficult for competitors to displace you.

What GEO Optimisation Involves

A comprehensive GEO strategy typically includes:

  • AI Visibility Audit: scanning how AI platforms currently perceive your business across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and DeepSeek
  • Competitor Analysis: identifying which businesses AI platforms currently recommend instead of yours
  • Content Strategy: developing a plan to create authoritative content that answers the questions AI platforms are being asked
  • Schema Implementation: adding structured data that helps AI platforms understand your business programmatically
  • Ongoing Optimisation: continuously publishing content, refining signals and monitoring results

GEO and AEO: Working Together

GEO is closely related to Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO). While GEO focuses broadly on being recommended by generative AI platforms, AEO focuses specifically on structuring your content to be used as direct answers. In practice, a strong AI visibility strategy combines both.

At Geo One, we specialise exclusively in GEO and AEO. Our AI Employees work continuously to scan, create, publish and optimise content that makes your business the one AI platforms recommend. You can check your current AI visibility position with our free AI Visibility Scanner.

Getting Started

The first step is understanding where you stand. Our AI Visibility Scanner analyses how AI platforms currently see your business and identifies the gaps. From there, our eight-step process builds your visibility systematically, month after month.

GEO is not a one-time fix. It is an ongoing discipline, much like SEO was in the early days of search. The businesses that start now will be the ones AI platforms trust and recommend tomorrow.
