GEO vs SEO: What Malaysian Businesses Need to Know

If you run a business in Malaysia, you almost certainly know what SEO is. You may have invested in it for years. But there is a new discipline that is rapidly becoming just as important: Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO).

GEO and SEO are related but fundamentally different. Understanding the distinction, and knowing when to invest in each, is becoming critical for Malaysian businesses that want to stay visible in a changing digital landscape.

What SEO Does

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) focuses on making your website rank higher in traditional search engine results. When someone searches “best dentist in Kuala Lumpur” on Google, SEO determines whether your practice appears on page one.

SEO works through a combination of on-page optimisation (keywords, meta tags, content quality), technical optimisation (site speed, mobile responsiveness, crawlability) and off-page factors (backlinks, domain authority). The goal is to appear as high as possible in a list of blue links.

What GEO Does

Generative Engine Optimisationfocuses on making your business the one that AI platforms recommend. When someone asks ChatGPT “Can you recommend a good dentist in KL?”, GEO determines whether your practice is mentioned in the response.

There is no list of links to rank on. The AI generates a direct response that may mention specific businesses, cite their websites, or recommend them by name. Your business is either in that response or it is not.

Key Differences

Discovery model

In SEO, the user sees multiple options and chooses. In GEO, the AI presents one or a few recommendations directly. Being recommended by AI is more like a personal referral than a search result.

Ranking factors

SEO rankings depend on keywords, backlinks and technical factors. GEO visibility depends on entity clarity, content authority, structured data quality and how well your content answers the specific questions people ask AI platforms.

Content approach

SEO content is optimised for keywords and search intent. GEO content is optimised for comprehensiveness and authority. AI platforms need to trust your content enough to cite it as a source and base their recommendations on it.

Measurement

SEO success is measured by rankings, organic traffic and click-through rates. GEO success is measured by AI mentions (how often AI platforms reference your business), AI citations (how often they link to your content) and recommendation positioning (whether you are the first, second or fifth business mentioned).

Do I Need Both?

Yes. SEO and GEO serve different channels, and both are important. Google search is not going away. It still handles billions of queries. But AI-assisted search is growing rapidly, and businesses that ignore it will lose visibility to competitors who invest early.

The good news is that some GEO and SEO work overlaps. High-quality content, structured data and a well-organised website help with both. But the specific optimisations differ, which is why specialist expertise matters.

Why GEO Is Becoming More Important

Several trends are accelerating the importance of GEO:

  • AI adoption is growing, and more people use AI assistants for research and recommendations every month
  • Google is integrating AI. Google’s AI Overviews and Gemini are changing how search results are presented
  • Early-mover advantage: AI platforms tend to reinforce their own recommendations, making it harder for late entrants to catch up
  • Higher conversion: an AI recommendation carries more weight than a search result because it feels like a personal endorsement

What Malaysian Businesses Should Do

If you are already investing in SEO, do not stop. But start building your GEO strategy alongside it. The businesses that establish AI visibility now will have a significant competitive advantage in the coming years.

Start by understanding where you stand. Our free AI Visibility Scanner shows how AI platforms currently see your business. From there, you can assess the gap and decide on the right plan to close it.

At Geo One, we focus exclusively on GEO and AEO. We do not do traditional SEO. That way, we complement your existing SEO work rather than competing with it. Our AI Employees handle the execution, and you maintain full control through our approval process.
