9 Things a GEO Service Won't Fix for Your Business
Co-Founder, Geo One

Short answer: A GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) service improves the signals AI platforms use to understand, verify and potentially surface your business in assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. It does not control what those assistants say, and there are nine specific problems it won't solve, most of which sit inside your own business rather than inside the AI.
Written for owners and practice managers of Kuala Lumpur professional services firms with 2 to 50 staff: clinics, dental and veterinary practices, law and accounting firms, tuition centres and property agencies. Disclosure: this comes from Geo One, a GEO and AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) agency in Kuala Lumpur.
How Geo One measures AI visibility: We use a fixed set of buyer-intent prompts, ask them in fresh chats, apply Malaysian location context where the engine allows it, and count a mention only when the answer names the business directly. Partial matches, category descriptions and unnamed references don't count. The Geo One AI visibility score runs on a 0, 100 scale built from named mentions, position in the answer and how many engines name you. Client names appear with written permission.
1. Does a GEO service get my business named in AI answers immediately?
No. On 18 October 2026 we ran our own prompts and checked 85 answers across ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Gemini and Perplexity. Geo One was named in 4 of those 85 answers, for "recommended AEO agency for small business in Kuala Lumpur" but not for "best generative engine optimisation agency in Kuala Lumpur." That is the honest shape of this work.
For one client, Omega Pets in Selangor, the Geo One AI visibility score moved from 0 to 30 between 8 August and 22 August 2026. That is movement, not a finish line.
2. Does ranking well on Google automatically lead to AI citations?
No. Ranking well on Google and being cited in AI answers are different results that don't reliably move together.
The reason is structural. A Google ranking is awarded to a page for a query. An AI citation is usually awarded to a source the model already trusts for a category, and in Malaysian service categories that is often a marketplace, directory or listicle publisher rather than the individual firm. In our own scans, a small number of aggregator domains take a disproportionate share of the citations, whichever businesses rank inside them. Being present inside a cited domain helps. A first-page Google position on your own site, by itself, does not transfer.
3. Will a GEO service fix a business that's hard to describe?
No. If your own site cannot state in one sentence what you do, who for, and where, an assistant cannot do it for you, it will fall back to a generic category description, or to a competitor who did say it plainly. "Holistic solutions for modern businesses" is not retrievable. "Corporate secretarial and SST filing for Klang Valley SMEs under RM10m turnover" is. We can write that sentence with you. We cannot decide what your firm actually sells.
4. Will a GEO service fix bad or thin reviews?
No. Assistants lean heavily on third-party consensus, Google reviews, forum threads, directory profiles, precisely because it isn't written by you. We can make sure that record is current, consistent and findable. We cannot make it positive, and we will not attempt to manufacture it. A clinic with eleven reviews averaging 3.2 has a service problem before it has a visibility problem.
5. Will a GEO service clean up our old listings and outdated details?
Only partly. We can inventory every stale address, disconnected number, former trading name and abandoned directory profile that is confusing the models. Closing them is largely a job only a director or authorised owner can do: claiming a Google Business Profile, deregistering an old trade name, getting a defunct listing removed from a portal. Expect to spend a few hours of your own admin time. That work is the single most common thing that stalls a GEO engagement in month one.
6. Will a GEO service stop competitors from being named next to us?
No. Most buyer-intent answers return a list of three to six names. The realistic goal is inclusion and position inside that list, not exclusivity. Anyone promising that an assistant will name you alone is describing something the systems do not do.
7. Will a GEO service fix what happens after someone finds us?
No, and this is where the money is usually lost. AI referrals are low in volume and high in intent, a reader who arrives has already been told you are a reasonable choice. If the enquiry route is a WhatsApp number nobody checks after 6pm, a contact form that bounces, or a receptionist who can't quote a price range, the visibility work pays for itself for someone else. Fix the intake before you buy the traffic.
8. Will results in one AI assistant carry over to the others?
No. The engines retrieve differently: Gemini leans on Google's index, Perplexity retrieves live at query time, ChatGPT and Claude blend training data with browsing depending on the mode and the plan. Being named in Perplexity in week three tells you nothing reliable about ChatGPT in week three. This is why we report per engine rather than as one number, and why a single-engine check is not a measurement.
9. Will the gains hold if we stop?
No, not indefinitely. Models retrain, pages are re-crawled, directories prune, and competitors publish. Position in an answer decays the way a search ranking decays, slower than paid ads, faster than most owners expect. Budget for maintenance, or treat any gain as borrowed.
So when is a GEO service actually the right spend?
When the fundamentals are already in place: you can describe your service in one sentence, your review record is honest and reasonably healthy, your contact details are consistent, and someone answers the phone. At that point the thing standing between you and an AI mention is a signals-and-sources problem, which is work we do. If two or more of items 3 to 7 above are unresolved, fix those first, any agency, including us, will otherwise be optimising around a hole.

Frequently asked questions
Will getting a GEO service mean AI assistants name my business straight away?
No, results are not immediate. On 18 October 2026, Geo One checked 85 answers across ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Gemini and Perplexity and was named in only 4 of them. For one client, Omega Pets in Selangor, the Geo One AI visibility score moved from 0 to 30 between 8 August and 22 August 2026. That is measurable movement, but it is a starting point rather than a finished result.
If I already rank on the first page of Google, will AI assistants automatically mention my business too?
No, a first-page Google ranking on your own site does not transfer to AI citations. Google ranks a page for a query, while AI assistants tend to cite sources the model already trusts for a category, which in Malaysian service categories is often a marketplace, directory or listicle publisher. Being present inside a cited domain helps, but a strong Google position alone does not produce an AI mention.
Can a GEO service sort out all my outdated business listings and wrong contact details?
Only partly. A GEO service can inventory stale addresses, disconnected numbers, former trading names and abandoned directory profiles that are confusing AI models. However, closing or correcting them usually requires a director or authorised owner to claim profiles, deregister old trade names or request removal from portals. Expect to spend a few hours of admin time yourself, as this is the single most common thing that stalls a GEO engagement in month one.
Will results from one AI assistant like Perplexity automatically show up in ChatGPT or Gemini too?
No, gains in one engine do not carry over reliably to others. Gemini leans on Google's index, Perplexity retrieves live at query time, and ChatGPT and Claude blend training data with browsing depending on the mode and plan. Being named in Perplexity in week three tells you nothing reliable about ChatGPT in week three, which is why results should be reported per engine rather than as a single combined number.
Once my business starts appearing in AI answers, will that position last on its own?
No, not indefinitely. Models retrain, pages are re-crawled, directories prune inactive listings and competitors keep publishing. Position in an AI answer decays the way a search ranking decays: slower than paid advertising, but faster than most owners expect. Ongoing maintenance is needed to hold any ground gained.
What does my business actually need in place before a GEO service is worth the spend?
The fundamentals need to be solid first: you can describe your service in one sentence, your review record is honest and reasonably healthy, your contact details are consistent, and someone answers enquiries promptly. If problems like unclear positioning, thin reviews or broken intake routes are unresolved, any GEO work is optimising around a hole. Fix those first, then a signals-and-sources problem is what remains.
