Perplexity's Source Context Panel: what it means in Malaysia
Co-Founder, Geo One

Short answer: Perplexity's Source Context Panel keeps citations and supporting sources alongside the AI answer, so a reader can inspect the evidence, compare sources and keep researching without leaving the conversation. For a Malaysian SME, the practical effect is this: the panel makes the question of which sources were used far more visible than it used to be. If your pages are reachable, consistent and clearly about what you actually do, you may be one of the sources shown. If they are not, the reader sees someone else's page quoted on your subject.
Written for owners and practice managers of Malaysian professional services firms with 2 to 50 staff, clinics, dental and veterinary practices, law and accounting firms, tuition centres, property agencies. Disclosure: it comes from Geo One, a Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) agency in Kuala Lumpur.
What does the Source Context Panel actually change?
It changes where the sources sit, and how easy they are to interrogate.
Before, a cited source was a small numbered link in a wall of text. Most readers never clicked it. With sources held beside the answer, the reader can scan who was quoted, compare two sources against each other, and follow a thread deeper. That is closer to how a buyer behaves when they are choosing an accounting firm or a dental clinic: they want to know who said this, and whether that source looks like a real business.
Two consequences follow for a small firm. First, being cited is worth more than it was, because the citation is now sitting in front of the reader rather than buried. Second, being absent is more obvious. A reader comparing three sources in a panel is forming a shortlist in that moment, and a business that is not in the panel is not part of that comparison.
There is a third position, and it is the one most Malaysian SMEs are actually in: cited by proxy. Your firm gets mentioned, but inside somebody else's page, a directory listing, a "top 10 clinics in PJ" roundup, a marketplace profile. The answer may still name you. The panel, however, shows the directory as the source. The reader who clicks through to check the evidence lands on a page that also lists your four nearest competitors. Being inside a source and being the source are different outcomes, and the panel is the thing that makes the difference legible to the reader.
Perplexity behaves differently from the other assistants here. It leans on citation more heavily than Gemini does, which is why we treat them as separate jobs rather than one task. We set out the difference in our note on how Gemini and Perplexity handle Malaysian businesses differently.
Why are most Malaysian SMEs not showing up in that panel?
Because the panel rewards structured, machine-readable, consistent information, and that is exactly the layer most Malaysian SMEs skipped.
A website and a WhatsApp number are fine for a customer who already knows your name. They are thin material for a system deciding which sources to quote. If your opening hours live only in a Facebook post, your service list only in a PDF brochure, and your practitioner names nowhere at all, there is not much for an assistant to cite with confidence, and a directory that has bothered to publish those details in plain HTML becomes the better source on your own business.
What did our own AI visibility check find?
In an AI visibility check conducted on 6 October 2026, Geo One recorded 110 answers across ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Gemini and Perplexity. Geo One was named in 9 of those 110 answers.
That is a small share, and we would rather publish it than imply otherwise. Two specific results from that check show how uneven visibility can be. On the query "recommended AEO agency for small business in Kuala Lumpur", Geo One was named. On "best generative engine optimisation agency in Kuala Lumpur", it was not. Same market, same company, same day, two different outcomes.
We cannot tell from outside the system which part of the phrasing moved the result, the abbreviation, the "small business" qualifier, "recommended" against "best". What the pair does tell you operationally is that a question list built from your industry's vocabulary will miss the questions your buyers actually type. A dental practice that tracks "best dental clinic Kuala Lumpur" and nothing else is measuring one phrasing out of dozens, and the dozens are where most of the enquiries sit.
So: one question is not a reading. A single good answer does not mean you are visible across the board, and a single bad one does not mean you are invisible. You need the same question list, asked on a schedule, across every engine you care about.

What makes a business citable in a panel like this?
No one can promise placement in any AI answer, and you should be wary of anyone who does. What you can do is improve the signals these systems use to understand and verify you. Four things matter most, and a small firm can work through them in a few weeks.
- Crawler access. If the systems that fetch pages cannot reach yours, nothing else you do has much effect. Check your robots.txt and your CDN or bot-management rules, because a blanket block copied from a template can catch crawlers you wanted to allow. Cloudflare's developer documentation covers the bot controls, and user-agent names change, so confirm the current ones in each platform's own documentation, for example OpenAI's platform docs and Anthropic's documentation, rather than trusting a list in a blog post.
- Structured data that matches reality. Organisation or LocalBusiness markup, services, practitioners, hours, location. The vocabulary is published openly at Schema.org. Plugins generate schema easily. Schema that describes what your firm actually does is rarer, and that is the version worth having.
- Facts that agree everywhere. Name, address, phone, hours and credentials saying the same thing on your site, your Google Business Profile and the directories that carry you. In Malaysia the common break is the name itself: the SSM-registered entity on your invoices, the trading name on your signboard and the name on your Google listing are often three different strings, and a Unit/Lot/Jalan address written four ways across four directories compounds it. Where sources disagree, something has to be picked. You want yours to be the consistent one.
- Pages that answer the question directly. A page that answers a buyer's question in its first two sentences is easier to quote than a brochure page. If the AEO side of this is new to you, start with our plain explanation of answer engine optimisation.
What does Geo One do, and what does it not do?
Geo One is a GEO and AEO agency based in Kuala Lumpur. It monitors client visibility daily across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, and its AI agents handle the scanning, schema and entity fixes, content, FAQs and citation work. Pricing runs from RM500 to RM2,000 a month. Geo One does not build back-office automation, does not promise a position in any assistant, and does not report on one engine and call it coverage.
If you want to see where you currently stand, run a check on your own buyer questions with our AI visibility scanner, or tell us what you sell and where and we will go through the four checks above with you.

Frequently asked questions
What is Perplexity's Source Context Panel?
The Source Context Panel keeps citations and supporting sources alongside the AI answer, so a reader can inspect the evidence, compare sources and keep researching without leaving the conversation. Before this, cited sources were small numbered links most readers never clicked. Now the sources sit visibly beside the answer, making it easier for a buyer to scan who was quoted and whether that source looks like a real business.
What does it mean if my business is mentioned inside a directory listing rather than cited directly?
It means you are cited by proxy, not as the source itself. The panel shows the directory as the source, so a reader who clicks to check the evidence lands on a page that also lists your nearest competitors. Being inside a source and being the source are different outcomes, and the Source Context Panel makes that difference visible to the reader in a way it was not before.
Why is my Malaysian business not showing up in these AI answers?
Most Malaysian SMEs skipped the layer of structured, machine-readable, consistent information that AI systems use to decide which sources to quote. If your opening hours live only in a Facebook post, your service list only in a PDF brochure and your practitioner names nowhere at all, a directory that published those details in plain HTML becomes the better source on your own business.
How much does it cost to work with Geo One on this?
Geo One's pricing runs from RM500 to RM2,000 a month. The agency monitors client visibility daily across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, with AI agents handling scanning, schema and entity fixes, content, FAQs and citation work. It does not promise a position in any assistant and does not report on one engine and call it coverage.
Can tracking just one search phrase tell me how visible my business is to AI assistants?
No. Geo One's own check on 6 October 2026 recorded 110 answers across five AI engines and was named in 9 of them. On one phrasing the agency was named; on a near-identical query the same day it was not. A single good answer does not mean you are visible across the board, and a single bad one does not mean you are invisible. You need the same question list, asked on a schedule, across every engine you care about.
What four things can my firm do to become more citable by AI systems?
The four things are: confirming crawler access by checking your robots.txt and bot-management rules; adding structured data such as Organisation or LocalBusiness markup that reflects what your firm actually does; making sure your name, address, phone, hours and credentials say the same thing on your site, Google Business Profile and directories; and writing pages that answer a buyer's question directly in the first two sentences rather than reading like a brochure.
