What is AI search presence management in Malaysia?

What is AI search presence management in Malaysia?

Short answer: AI search presence management is the ongoing work of checking what ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity say about your business, correcting the facts those engines are reading, and keeping that correct as the engines and the Malaysian rules keep moving. It isn't a one-off project. Answers change week to week, each engine draws on a different mix of sources, and Malaysia now has an active regulatory file on AI-generated content, so what you publish about yourself sits inside a compliance frame that didn't exist two years ago.

This is written for owners and practice managers of Klang Valley professional services firms with 2 to 50 staff: clinics, dental and veterinary practices, law and accounting firms, tuition centres, property agencies. Disclosure: it comes from Geo One, a Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) agency in Kuala Lumpur.

What does presence management actually cover?

Three jobs, and they're separate.

The first is reachability. An AI assistant can only describe a business whose pages it can fetch, or whose details it finds on sources it does trust. Crawler controls, server rules and bot settings all decide that, and most owners have never looked at theirs. OpenAI publishes how its crawlers identify themselves in the OpenAI bots page, and those user agents change, which is one reason this is maintenance rather than a fix.

The second is accuracy. The engines assemble a description of you from your site, your Google Business Profile, directories, news mentions and listing pages. If three of those disagree about your opening hours, your services or even your legal name, the assistant will pick one, and it may not pick the current one. Making the facts consistent, and marking them up using the vocabulary at Schema.org so a machine can read them without guessing, is dull work that pays.

The third is consideration. That's whether you get named at all when someone asks a category question, such as which accounting firm handles SST filing for small trading companies. That one depends heavily on what third parties say about you, not just on your own pages. We've written separately about what answer engine optimisation means in practice.

The first two you can fix yourself in an afternoon each. The third is the one that takes months, which is also why it's the one worth paying attention to.

Why isn't ChatGPT the whole picture?

Because presence is split across engines that behave differently, and two of them barely show up in your analytics.

ChatGPT is the biggest single AI surface in this market, and for many Malaysians it is now the first place a buying question gets typed.

But it is no longer the only one. Claude, Gemini and Perplexity each answer the same buyer questions from a different mix of sources, and the share of AI referrals arriving from them has grown. The measurement problem is that Perplexity shows its sources openly, while Claude and Gemini commonly pass no referrer, so those visits land in your reports as direct traffic and go uncounted. If you want the longer version, see why monitoring only ChatGPT leaves most of it invisible.

Language is part of this too. Google has been extending AI Overviews to more languages, Malay among them, and a Bahasa Malaysia version of a buyer question can return a different answer from the English one, so presence management in this market means testing both.

What do Malaysia's new content rules mean for you?

This is the part most AI visibility articles skip, and it's the reason "presence management" is a better description of the work than "optimisation".

Malaysia's Online Safety Act 2025 (Act 866) places new duties on licensed platforms and content service providers, with subsidiary rules still being developed, and the labelling of AI-generated images and video has been raised in public discussion as a possible requirement for those providers.

Separately, the Content Forum has consulted on updating the Content Code's disclosure rules for AI-generated content and influencer marketing. Malaysia's National Guidelines on AI Governance and Ethics, issued by MOSTI in 2024, remain voluntary and set out seven principles including transparency and accountability. They don't prescribe a labelling format.

We're not your lawyers and this isn't legal advice. The practical read for a 12-person clinic is this: the licensing duties in Act 866 are aimed at service providers, not at your website. But the direction across all three documents is disclosure, and it's reasonable to assume that AI-assisted marketing content will face more expectation of labelling over time, not less. Three habits cost nothing now and save argument later: keep a one-line record of who in the business approved each page and when; keep claims about outcomes factual and attributable to a named person; and don't publish AI-drafted copy about your own services that a staff member couldn't defend to a patient or a client in the room.

What does a presence check look like in practice?

It looks like asking the questions and writing down the answers. Here's ours, which we publish because we ask clients to look at theirs.

In our own AI visibility check on 18 October 2026, we ran a fixed set of buyer questions and recorded 85 answers across ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Gemini and Perplexity. Geo One was named in 4 of them. One prompt where we were not named: "best generative engine optimisation agency in Kuala Lumpur". One where we were: "recommended AEO agency for small business in Kuala Lumpur".

That gap is the useful part. The broad superlative question tends to be answered from third-party roundup articles, and we don't appear in the Malaysian agency roundups that currently get quoted. The narrower question, with a buyer qualifier attached, is answered from pages that address that exact situation. Most SMEs will see the same split: absent from the generic category question, present on the specific one, or the reverse.

The discipline that makes the check worth anything is keeping the prompt set fixed. If you reword the questions each time, you learn nothing, because you can't tell whether the answer moved or the question did. Write the prompts once, in both English and Malay, and re-run the same list. Separately, re-check reachability after any hosting, CDN or plugin change, and re-check your listed facts whenever something in the business changes, a new practitioner, a new service, different Saturday hours. That's why we run scans on a fixed schedule rather than when someone remembers to check.

What this work does not do

It doesn't control what any assistant says. Nobody can promise a position inside ChatGPT or Gemini, and anyone who does is selling something they can't deliver. What presence management does is improve the signals those systems use: reachable pages, consistent facts, structured data, content that answers real buyer questions, and legitimate mentions on sources relevant to your category.

It's also not a replacement for the rest of your marketing. Referrals and Google still bring in work.

Geo One's monthly programmes run from RM500 to RM2,000, and you can see what sits in each band on our pricing page. If you'd rather just find out where you currently stand, send us the five questions your buyers ask and we'll run them. Start with a message through our contact page or WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI search presence management and do I actually need it?

AI search presence management is the ongoing work of checking what ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity say about your business, correcting the facts those engines are reading, and keeping that correct as the engines and the rules keep changing. It is not a one-off project because answers change week to week and each engine draws on a different mix of sources. If buyers in your category are asking AI assistants for recommendations, your facts need to be consistent and reachable across all of them.

Is it enough to just check ChatGPT or do other AI engines matter too?

ChatGPT alone is not enough. Claude, Gemini and Perplexity answer the same buyer questions from different sources, and Claude and Gemini commonly pass no referrer, so their visits show up in your reports as direct traffic and go uncounted. Check all four engines, not just the one you can see in analytics.

Why does Malaysia need a different approach to AI presence?

Buyers here ask in English and in Bahasa Malaysia, and the two versions of a question can return different answers, so a presence check in Malaysia tests both. The regulatory picture is also moving: the Online Safety Act 2025, the Content Forum's review of the Content Code and MOSTI's AI governance guidelines all point towards more disclosure of AI-generated content over time.

Do Malaysia's new online content laws affect what I publish about my business using AI tools?

The direct licensing duties in Malaysia's Online Safety Act 2025 (Act 866) target platforms and service providers, not your business website. But the direction across Act 866, the Content Forum's review of the Content Code and MOSTI's National Guidelines on AI Governance and Ethics all point toward greater disclosure of AI-generated content over time. Keeping a record of who approved each page, making claims factual and attributable, and not publishing AI-drafted copy a staff member could not defend are three low-cost habits worth starting now.

What three things does presence management actually cover?

Presence management covers three separate jobs. Reachability is whether AI crawlers can fetch your pages at all, which depends on your crawler controls and server settings. Accuracy is whether the facts those engines find, across your site, Google Business Profile and directories, are consistent with each other and marked up so a machine can read them without guessing. Consideration is whether you get named when someone asks a category question, which depends heavily on what third parties say about you and takes months to influence.
