GEO budget for a Malaysian SME: what year one actually costs
Co-Founder, Geo One

Based on Geo One's published introductory prices reviewed on 20 September 2026, a monthly billed 12-month scenario produces RM7,000 in known Geo One fees for Bronze where the RM1,000 Foundation Setup fee applies, RM12,000 for Silver where it is waived, and RM24,000 for Gold where it is waived. These figures exclude applicable taxes and third-party costs and assume the introductory monthly rate is contractually fixed for all 12 months.
These are Geo One's prices, not a Malaysian market survey. Other providers structure their work differently. Compare scope, exclusions, contract period and measurement—not only the monthly fee.
GEO improves signals that help AI assistants understand, verify and potentially mention a business. It overlaps with Search Engine Optimisation because both require accessible pages, accurate information and useful content, but neither guarantees a recommendation. Pricing methodology
The figures are calculated from Geo One's published Malaysian package prices on 20 September 2026:
Monthly package price × 12 + setup fee − documented waiver or discount + separately disclosed extras and tax.
The setup fee, waivers, discounts and exclusions are displayed separately. Geo One currently publishes a six-month minimum term and higher prices scheduled from January 2027. These scenarios assume the introductory rate is fixed for a complete 12-month engagement. If a customer signs for six months only, months seven to twelve must be recalculated using the renewal price in the quotation.
Geo One also advertises a discount for paying six months upfront. This article does not assume automatically that the discount continues for a second six-month period. Request a written annual total before comparing monthly and upfront options. The signed quotation controls if it differs from this article.
What affects the price?
Prompt coverage. One service and location may need fewer tracked questions than a group covering several specialties. Confirm the prompt allowance, platforms and scan frequency.
Languages. English, Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin can produce different sources and answers. Monitoring another language is distinct from professionally translating website content.
Content and review. Packages may vary in content volume, approval stages and specialist review. Confirm who verifies regulated claims and publishes the finished work.
Authority work. Directory corrections, mention reclamation and media outreach involve different effort. Outreach never guarantees publication or citation.
Website condition. An editable site with one accurate business identity is simpler than an unsupported site combined with old addresses, duplicate profiles and conflicting listings. Developer work may sit outside the retainer.
Scenario A: solo consultant on Bronze
This scenario assumes one service line, one language, one business entity, an editable website and no substantial development work.
| Budget item | Calculation | Year-one amount |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze retainer | RM500 × 12 | RM6,000 |
| Foundation Setup | Published one-time fee | RM1,000 |
| Known Geo One fees | RM7,000 | |
| Developer work | If required | Not included |
| Photography or paid listings | If approved | Not included |
| Applicable SST | Confirm in quotation | Not included |
| Planning subtotal | Before tax and extras | RM7,000 |
This scenario uses the currently published Bronze allowance of six tracked prompts. Verify the platforms and scan cadence in the quotation. The setup fee is included because the public waiver refers to qualifying Silver and Gold commitments. If it is waived, show a separate −RM1,000 line.
Scenario B: multi-service dental group on Gold
This scenario assumes four service areas, English and Bahasa Malaysia monitoring, several directory corrections and Gold-level scope.
| Budget item | Calculation | Year-one amount |
|---|---|---|
| Gold retainer | RM2,000 × 12 | RM24,000 |
| Foundation Setup | Waived with qualifying Gold commitment | RM0 |
| Known Geo One fees | RM24,000 | |
| Translation and photography | If required | Not included |
| Website development | If required | Not included |
| Paid listings or media fees | If approved | Not included |
| Applicable SST | Confirm in quotation | Not included |
| Planning subtotal | Before tax and extras | RM24,000 |
Monitoring prompts in two languages does not automatically include certified translation or complete multilingual service pages. If the real scope fits Silver plus add-ons, calculate each line separately. Do not describe an unpublished RM1,500 package unless it appears in the written quotation.
The gap between the scenarios reflects scope, monitoring, languages, content, authority work and existing website condition—not simply employee count.
What can a GEO retainer include?
The signed quotation must define the deliverables. Depending on package, work may include:
Technical review. Checking whether relevant automated systems can access important pages. OpenAI separates OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot and ChatGPT-User; see its crawler documentation. Sites using Cloudflare should also check AI Crawl Control.
Structured data. Reviewing Schema.org markup for visible business facts. Confirm whether recommendations, implementation or both are included.
Business-information consistency. Finding material contradictions across the website, Google Business Profile, directories and professional registers. Minor formatting differences are not automatically errors.
Content. Drafting pages, articles or FAQs that answer genuine buyer questions. Confirm volume, review, approval and publishing responsibility.
Authority work. Identifying appropriate directories, professional profiles, publications and outreach opportunities. Targeting does not guarantee placement.
Monitoring. Repeating defined prompts across specified platforms and languages. Timestamped results are observations, not permanent rankings.
Technical access should be checked early, but a blocked website does not necessarily prevent a mention based on third-party sources. Allowing a crawler also does not guarantee indexing or citation.
How might the work change during the year?
Early work commonly emphasises diagnosis and repair: baseline measurement, crawler access, structured data review, Business Profile corrections and conflicting public facts. Duration depends on access, approvals and existing systems.
Later work may emphasise content, authority opportunities and repeated monitoring. Monitoring can show that answers changed; it cannot prove one article, citation or profile edit caused the change.
Do not treat three months as a guaranteed repair period or result date. Ask for deliverables and decision points that can be verified independently of an assistant's answer.
What is normally outside the retainer?
Unless the quotation says otherwise, plan separately for:
- Developer work and website redesign.
- Photography and video.
- Professional translation.
- Paid listings, sponsorships or media fees.
- Applicable service tax.
Confirm who controls the CMS, domain, hosting, analytics and Google Business Profile before signing. Missing access can add cost and delay work.
Is RM500 a month enough?
Bronze is the narrowest published scope. It may suit a solo professional with one clear service, a current website and clean business records. It is not a smaller version of every Gold deliverable. Compare prompt allowance, frequency, content, review stages, authority work and excluded implementation.
A firm with multiple services, locations or languages may need a broader package or custom quotation. A higher fee still cannot guarantee a recommendation from any AI assistant.
Frequently asked questions
How much does GEO cost for a small business in Malaysia in the first year?
At Geo One's pricing, year one of Generative Engine Optimisation costs a Malaysian SME between RM6,000 and RM24,000, which is a retainer of RM500 to RM2,000 a month across twelve months. Where you land in that range depends on how many buyer prompts you track, how many languages you track them in, and how much of your website needs fixing before anything else can work.
What makes the price go up or down within that range?
Three things move the number: how many buyer prompts you track, how many languages you track them in, and how much of your website needs fixing before anything else can work. A firm tracking a handful of prompts in one language with a clean site sits lower in the range. More prompts, more languages and more repair work push you higher.
What costs are not included in the monthly retainer?
Budget separately for developer hours if you cannot edit your own site, photography for your Google Business Profile, and translation if your buyers ask their questions in Bahasa Malaysia or Mandarin. These sit outside the retainer and vary by firm, so treat them as a separate line in your year one planning rather than assuming the monthly fee absorbs them.
What am I actually getting each month for the retainer?
Six things, in roughly this order of importance: crawler access so AI crawlers can read your site at all, structured data marking up your business facts, entity consistency across your website, Google Business Profile, directories and professional registers, content and FAQs that answer real buyer questions, citations from relevant directories and industry publications, and monitoring of tracked prompts across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity.
When will I start seeing results if I sign up?
Months one to three are heavy on diagnosis and repair rather than visible results. That period covers the baseline scan, crawler access, schema, Google Business Profile cleanup and fixing facts that contradict each other. Very little of it is visible to a customer and some of it is dull, but it determines whether the rest of the year has anything to stand on. The money is flat across twelve months; the work is not.
Is this suitable for a firm of our size?
This is written for owners and partners of Kuala Lumpur professional services firms with 2 to 50 staff and nobody in-house who owns marketing. If that describes you, the RM500 to RM2,000 monthly range is the bracket to plan against. Firms with an in-house marketing owner may split the work differently, but the six monthly components stay the same.
Why does crawler access matter so much?
Because it determines whether AI crawlers can read your site at all. GPTBot and the OpenAI search-time agents, along with ClaudeBot and its sibling agents, use separate user agent names, so allowing one and blocking another is easy to do by accident. The controls sit in a Cloudflare panel most SME owners have never opened, which is why it heads the list of monthly work.
