Why Google Analytics is missing your ChatGPT visitors
Co-Founder, Geo One

Short answer: GA4 has no built-in channel for AI assistants. When someone clicks a link inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity, GA4 files the visit as a referral if the platform passes a referrer, and as direct if it doesn't. Many ChatGPT clicks arrive with neither a referrer nor a tracking parameter, so the ChatGPT line in your reports shrinks while the visits carry on. And if what you actually want to know is whether an assistant names your firm when a buyer asks, click counting won't answer it. You have to ask the question and record the answer, on a schedule.
Written for owners and practice managers of Kuala Lumpur professional services firms with 2 to 50 staff, clinics, dental and veterinary practices, law and accounting firms, tuition centres, property agencies, by Geo One, a generative engine optimisation (GEO) and answer engine optimisation (AEO) agency in Kuala Lumpur.
Why did the ChatGPT line in my GA4 report drop?
Because of how the click is labelled, not how many clicks arrive.
GA4 works out the channel from two inputs: the referrer the browser passes along, and any utm_ parameters stuck on the URL. If neither arrives, the session lands in direct, the same bucket as someone typing your address from memory. A large share of ChatGPT clicks reach websites with no referrer and no utm_source, which is exactly that case. Links opened inside an app's own browser window routinely drop the referrer, and some privacy settings do the same. Nothing about your website changed. The label did.
That sits on top of a structural gap: GA4 has no native AI assistant channel at all. Google's answer is a custom channel group you configure yourself, which means these visits were never being counted consistently in the first place, the drop you noticed is a visible symptom of a measurement that was always partial.
How much falls through varies by site and by month, and no public figure for Malaysia exists. In the client accounts we look at, the pattern is consistent: the direct channel grows on pages that nobody types in by hand, in the same weeks that assistants start citing them.
What can I still get out of Google Analytics?
Three things, and it is worth doing all three before you spend money anywhere else.
Build a custom channel group. The referrals that do label themselves should be grouped as AI traffic instead of scattering across referral and organic. Group the hostnames the assistants send when they send anything, chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com, plus the utm_source values some of them attach. It takes an afternoon. It will not recover the untagged sessions, but it stops you undercounting the ones you already have, and it gives you one row to watch instead of five.
Watch where direct traffic lands. Open the Landing page report, compare it against the direct channel, and ignore your home page. Direct sessions normally hit the home page, because that is what people type or bookmark. If direct visits start arriving on a specific service page, a fees page, or a single partner's bio, something pointed that person at that exact URL. An unlabelled AI answer is one of the few candidates. It is a hint, not a measurement, and you should not report it as one.
Keep Search Console separate in your thinking. It measures Google Search impressions and clicks, and AI Overview clicks are folded into those Search totals rather than broken out. The Search Console help documentation sets out what the reports cover. Answers given inside ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity are not in there at all.
What does an AI visibility check record that GA4 cannot?
It records answers, not clicks. The method: write the questions your buyers actually type, put each one to several assistants, and log whether your business is named, how it is described, and which sources were cited.
Here is ours. In a visibility check on 18 October 2026, we looked at 85 answers across ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Gemini and Perplexity. Geo One was named in 4 of them, for "recommended AEO agency for small business in Kuala Lumpur" but not for "best generative engine optimisation agency in Kuala Lumpur".
That is an uncomfortable number to publish, and it is the point. A referrer header can disappear overnight and take your reporting with it. A record of 85 answers on a dated day does not move. It tells you which questions you appear in, which you are absent from, and who is being quoted instead, which is the gap you then work on. We explain the checks themselves in what our AI agents actually check in a visibility scan, and the sensible rhythm for a small firm in how often AI visibility scans should run.
In what order should I set this up?
- Write 20 to 40 real buyer questions. Not keywords. The sentence a client types at 11pm, in English and in Bahasa Malaysia if that is how your buyers speak.
- Run them manually once. Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity each question yourself and record the answers in a spreadsheet. You now have a baseline that does not depend on analytics at all.
- Check you are readable. Confirm your site is not blocking AI crawlers, and that your business facts match across your website, Google Business Profile and your SSM record. OpenAI publishes how its crawlers identify themselves on its bots page.
- Fix the description before chasing the mention. Schema markup, consistent entity details and a clear services page give an assistant something specific to repeat. Schema.org lists the structured data types most firms need.
- Set a repeat date. Monthly is enough for most SMEs. The value is the trend line, not any single reading.
If you hand that scanning job to a vendor who also touches customer data, check the contract. Malaysia's Personal Data Protection (Amendment) Act 2024 brought data processors directly under the Security Principle and introduced mandatory breach notification; the Personal Data Protection Department publishes the commencement dates and guidelines. A written processing agreement with anyone handling your data is not optional paperwork.
What will monitoring not fix?
Monitoring does not change an answer. It tells you what the answer is. If Claude does not name your practice, a scan report will not move it. What may improve the signals assistants use is slower work: readable pages, consistent entity data, FAQ content that answers the question directly, and legitimate mentions on directories, professional bodies and publications that cover your category.
Keep GA4 running. Just stop reading the ChatGPT row as if it were the whole picture.

Frequently asked questions
Why does ChatGPT show almost no traffic in my GA4 report?
Most ChatGPT clicks arrive with no referrer and no utm_ tracking parameter, so GA4 files them as direct traffic rather than as a ChatGPT visit. Nothing changed on your website. The label changed, and the visits are still happening but hiding inside your direct channel.
How do I stop AI traffic scattering across my GA4 reports?
Build a custom channel group in GA4 that collects the hostnames AI assistants send when they do pass a referrer: chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com, plus any utm_source values they attach. It takes an afternoon to set up. It will not recover visits that arrived with no referrer at all, but it stops you undercounting the sessions you already have and gives you one row to watch instead of five.
Can I tell if AI assistants are sending visitors to a specific page on my site?
You can get a hint by opening the Landing page report in GA4 and filtering for the direct channel, then ignoring your home page. Direct sessions normally hit the home page because that is what people type or bookmark. If direct visits start arriving on a specific service page, fees page or a single partner's bio, something pointed that person at that exact URL, and an unlabelled AI answer is one of the few candidates. Treat it as a hint, not a measurement.
What does an AI visibility check tell me that Google Analytics cannot?
An AI visibility check records answers, not clicks. You write the questions your buyers actually type, put each one to several assistants, and log whether your business is named, how it is described and which sources were cited. A referrer header can disappear overnight and take your reporting with it. A record of answers on a dated day does not move, showing you which questions you appear in, which you are absent from and who is being quoted instead.
How often should a small firm run AI visibility checks?
Monthly is enough for most SMEs. The value is the trend line, not any single reading. Start by running the questions manually once across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity and recording the answers in a spreadsheet. That gives you a baseline that does not depend on analytics at all. From there, a repeat date once a month lets you track whether your visibility improves, holds or drops across different questions and assistants.
Will monitoring my AI visibility actually improve the answers assistants give about my business?
Monitoring does not change an answer. It tells you what the answer currently is. If an assistant does not name your practice, a scan report alone will not move it. What may improve the signals assistants use is slower work: readable pages, consistent entity data across your website, Google Business Profile and SSM record, FAQ content that answers questions directly, and legitimate mentions on directories, professional bodies and publications that cover your category.
